ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Elizabeth Mbau

Elizabeth Mbau, born and raised in Kenya, has always had a connection with nature and farming. Working as a coordinator of farmer training programs in the coffee sector, she observed farmers’ adaptability, bargaining power and income becoming eroded over time. Additionally, rising cost of labour and declining access to extension services, contributed to the rising use of highly hazardous pesticides. To address these issues, she decided to look into indigenous knowledge on plants for safe, affordable and effective alternatives for pest control, and experiment with enterprise setup options that would ensure broad distribution of benefits in farming communities.

Alongside her work with farmers, Elizabeth enjoys exploring new places. Once, she visited Owino Market in Kampala in neighbouring Uganda and was fascinated by the bountiful and colourful displays of herbs and spices. She was inspired to develop a brand of herbal tea from indigenous plants. This was the beginning of Strungi Limited, named after the word used for strong/black tea in many parts of Eastern Africa.
